10 Spic-and-Span Cleaning and Organizing Ideas for Your Garage

Summertime organizing was a high priority for my husband and myself when we were at his parents’ home of 50-plus years here in early June when we were home for his father’s memorial.
The sheds and garage had basically remained untouched since we were last there in 2015 due to Mr. Ethereal’s father’s health, so…
A good dusting, scrubbing, and a fixing of things and such was in order…

I shared this sweet photograph of my wonderful husband Charles (Mr. Ethereal) recently but I like it a lot so here he is again! I see his really-tired face as a tribute to the hard work he puts into everything he does every day. Guess this is the Father’s Day post I didn’t get written this year with all that has been going on… 💝 😉

So today here are Mr. Ethereal’s 10 ideas-that-work for cleaning out your garage:

1. Begin with moving EVERYTHING out of your garage that clutters the main floor.

This may take several days or several weekends of all-day work. Know too that you will have to pull everything back inside at night so leave plenty of time to pull do so. Rebox and organize as you work. Make several trips to local donation centers helps, too.

2. Move like-items into groups and begin weeding items into…
3. Keep and donate/garage sale piles.

Cleaning and organizing always sound so simple but it is hard to do when we have memories attached to items, our things… It is really important to respect the feelings of family members and let them weed through their own boxes.

One of the things Charles most wanted to get done while we were home was really cleaning and organizing the garage for his mother. His father, Charles Sr. (“Pete”), used to keep it in good order but as he became older, Pete just couldn’t do it anymore. So, it was important to Charles to do this for his father.

My thought was to store the heavier items all on the bottom two shelves. The light-weight sports bottles and pastry tools went onto the upper shelving and cookware and stored pastas went into the middle with its new, heavier support.
4. Rebuild/Build any needed shelving  Charles rebuilt and reinforced the 1″ x 2″ center support “T-supports” his father had put in these big box store melanine cabinets. Screwing the supports to the shelving to keep it from moving was important in case these supports are ever bumped (my idea, one was leaning when we first opened the cabinet).

His father already had side supports in place for a couple of shelves. Charles added extra 1″ x 2″ wood supports across the back of the cabinet of the lower shelving to help distribute the weight of heavier items.

My mission while my husband was working on the shelving was to go buy a 4′ x 8′ particle board sheet and have someone in the big-box lumber department cut it into shelving sized-to-fit. We replaced four lower shelf pieces and added in two additional shelves for even more storage.

These cabinet photographs were taken after they were cleaned and reorganized inside. Mr. Ethereal also worked hard on reorganizing boxes stored above here and around the garage. Like-sized boxes and items always fit better together than when scattered around a room.

5. Organize and group  My mother-in-law Gini and sister-in-law Jodi keep entertaining pieces and cookware stored inside these garage cabinets. These spaces had big open gaps previously and my task was to organize these spaces to:
  1. Utilize the cabinet space better to hold more items.

  2. Make it more functional by grouping like items together.

**Getting all the serving platters and cookie sheets organized vertically inside each cabinet makes a big difference! They had been stored horizontally previously and this wasn’t the best use of the available shelving. It left a lot of open gaps.

Another area I helped organize is this small pantry in the laundry area of the garage. My inlaws’ home is an early 1960’s home built on a double lot that the builder himself owned. They are the second owners.

Some serving trays and Sterno trays had to be stores horizontally and that’s where the added narrowly-spaced shelves came in handy (shorter-height areas are good for these needs).

6. Get family members to go through stored boxes reboxing items still needed/still wanted. Items no longer needed were then boxed for donation and for a future garage sale.

7. Utilize each family member’s best skills  Some people are overwhelmed and some people are just better organizers. It helps when it’s not your own things, too.  Just having a friend to help you begin the process is sometimes all that is needed to get a project going and completed.

Cleaning, clearing out items and organizing is to me the hardest thing one has to do in terms of housework! Getting some help is a huge motivator.

8. Keep sweeping, wiping shelves/items off as you go  This is always the grossest part of this deep-type of cleaning but it is sooo necessary! Use your old kitchen towels and saved diapers. Anything too grimey/greasy to wash, throw it away. Toweling breaks down in the landfill and is perfectly recyclable. ♼

9. Take donations to thrift shops and recyclers  Have a few family member help you (this is great for getting the kids involved!) by bagging up aluminum drinking cans, glass bottles and plastic recyclables to take over to the local donation center. In our family, if the kids helped they benefited from the cash made when turning these items in! Our nephew Corey took over a full truck-bed of recyclables from the family home in his pickup truck and that cash goes back into the gas tank ~ a definite win!!!

10. Finish organizing and then… Decorate! Charles was finishing putting things up on the counter here so that part of the counter could be a display/work area. A long piece of melanine board was leftover so I suggested, “What about adding a display shelf?” (Actually, we thought of adding a shelf early-on in the process to add another storage area.) 💝

Love this awesome truck that Charles’ father gave him! I think it was Pete’s before Charles owned it. We will bring it back to our home maybe next time…

Have a little fun to celebrate!

At the end of a hard week’s work, and doing some last minute hanging organization of tools used everyday, Mr. Ethereal worked his magic one last time hanging this shelf.

Mrs. Ethereal went around gathering her father-in-love’s vintage oil cans and suggested the metal truck Charles had painted when he was 12 years old. These items all had a car-theme and would play nicely together. Even the old welding tool of Charles’ grandfather’s.
Now this whole area has a 1950’s to 1970’s motor speedway-look to it!!!

Love this hood ornament!!! Charles told me that it came off of
a particular car (a 1970’s era El Camino?) but I forget…

Please pin me

Classic vintage… 🚙The hardhat is from when Charles’ grandfather retired from Cal-Trans and road building construction in the early 1970’s.

A job well done

The biggest benefit of completely organizing this garage space and the family’s three outdoor sheds is how now our relatives are motivated to continue cleaning and organizing indoors. Yours will be too!

They are looking forward to holding a few garage sales over the summer and continue going through many years of paperwork. My mother-in-law has told us over several phone calls about all the dusting, and shredding of old tax paperwork she has been doing. Corey is going to take the metal gathered on the side of the house over to the local metal recyclers and my sister-in-law Jodi is helping when she isn’t working.

Probably the best benefit of helping someone work on a daunting cleaning project is the happiness it gives them when the task is completed…

This week’s features definitely have a theme to them – organization!  Maybe it’s the New Year setting in, or Marie Kondo’s new Netflix show ‘Tidying Up’, but I am ready to de-clutter and redecorate EVERY room in my house! First up on the to-do list this year is to give my new home office a makeover.  I shared the mood board on my blog last year:

https://southbound.blog/home-decor/pink-gold-home-office-inspiration/

I can’t wait to get started on this space!! It will be great to have a dedicated work space for myself to focus, and will also act as a guest room too.

Another area that we are focusing on this year is finishing up our kitchen makeover.  The moodboard was shared last year too, and we’ve made some good progress on it over the past few months!  We just need to put up the new backsplash, finish painting the lower cabinets and we’ll be all done.

Cleaning, Cobwebs and Memories, Oh My!

What do cobwebs and memories
have to do with each other?
Not much, except this type of cleaning will be
bringing up a ton of memories.
Now put cobwebs, cleaning and this photograph together
and you’ll get a little picture of what I’ll be doing over
this next week…
😉

Sawhorses, bookcases, the 1940’s Danish maple table I refinished and had made into a sofa table, and
my favorite easy chair that is worn and shabby ~ sitting next to our 1880’s reproduction French armoire
bought around the year 2000 from a woman closing her gift shop at a mall in Oceanside, California.

Hubby has a two-week business trip to Southern California
this week and next so…
I’ll be heading back to California to check on our storage units
and to do some much needed cleaning and spraying
as we prepare to get our household
goods moved to Texas.

When Charles went by our two storage units in September of 2017
he said they were full of cobwebs…
Ick!
Eeek!!
There aren’t too many things I really don’t like
but…
spiders are one of them!!!

<!– /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:"MS 明朝"; mso-font-charset:78; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1791491579 18 0 131231 0;} @font-face {font-family:"Cambria Math"; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1107305727 0 0 415 0;} @font-face {font-family:Cambria; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1073743103 0 0 415 0;} @font-face {font-family:"Edwardian Script ITC"; panose-1:3 3 3 2 4 7 7 13 8 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 0 0 0 1 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-unhide:no; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"MS 明朝"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} .MsoChpDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; mso-default-props:yes; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"MS 明朝"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} @page WordSection1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;}

So, first order  of business was to call our storage landlord
and ask if it would be alright to set off some of those “bug bombs”
in our storage units and my message was returned with a yes!
“Whew!!!”
I just need to make sure my neighbors will not be there when I set them off ~ hopefully I can do that this coming Thursday evening and let the spray sit inside over the weekend.
I’ll leave my neighbors small notes next to their locks to let
them know that I sprayed so they don’t wonder about
the smell.
🙂

Happy Memories

I am thinking of selling some things while I am out there
and I’ve considered selling this antique oak dining table…
except for my birthday one year my father-in-love made
me two leaves for it.
Those leaves go with the original ones that came with the table when I found it in Auburn, California in 1993.
There it stayed at that shop as I worked to pay it off
at $100/month.
Then this old Victorian stayed with my longest known best friends whom I’ve known since our freshman year of high school
at their home in Northern California
for another year.
Finally when our son was 5 months old in January of 1995
we drove up to see our inlaws, our son and daughter’s
great-grandmother {who passed shortly thereafter}
and to visit our friends ~ that table of memories made the
trip home to Southern California to live with us
in our first and then our second homes.

Can I really part with it?

This chair basically came with our second house.
The previous owners were selling all of their furniture with
their move up the hill to an area called Greer Ranch.
This chair in all its floral beauty was so comfortable and
practically new so I made an offer and it stayed with its home.
I made a slipcover out of a matelassé bedspread that I found at AmVets Thrift Store in Escondido, California
probably eight years ago now.

The chair is beginning to lose its seat and the stuffing has
fallen apart in the back piece but I remade a new cover
for the back piece out of heavy muslin and
{shown above}
then lovingly made the welted slipcover taking care
using the original cover as my pattern.
There are the the most beautiful roses in a twining vine
along parts of the matelassé and I designed the cover
lining up the scalloped edges of the three edges of the quilt
to create the skirt bottom around the chair’s lower edge.

Can I sell this chair?
Maybe…

Now I have been looking for a large Welsh cupboard for probably 20 years or more and the ones I found in antique stores
I just could not afford.
One day however I found this sweet new Shabby Chic cupboard
and buffet at a now-defunct gift and tea shop for $300.
Once again it was another of my layaways.
It took only a month or two to pay it off.
Made around the angel picture frame, the man from Riverside
who made a number of these cupboards and sold them to the
owner of this shop
{or consigned them, I don’t remember}
probably doesn’t make them anymore.
These custom-made cupboards were hot items then
and were beloved because of the items incorporated
into their designs.
No, this cupboard really doesn’t hold much on its upper shelves and I used our table saw and cut and installed a second interior bottom shelf inside the lower doors matching the paint from one of the original doorknobs.
It was made more functional with that shelf addition and it has held hundreds of pounds of stacked china on the bottom shelf and
17 teapots and various creamers and sugars
along the upper shelf hidden behind those doors.

I have planned to sell it as it has had a good life with us
and I’m ready to find something bigger and different
but really
I am pretty attached to my furniture and as a curated group
they all go together and a part of me.
The $5.00 goose which was part of the goods sold at the model homes of which
our first home was a part of ~ Vista Homes, Beezer Homes, Murrieta, California.
Chalk it up to moving over 40 times in my life with
all of my parents’ military moves then college and
our young married lives.
Well, you get the picture…
😉

Some people are more than able to sell everything they own
and move on.
Perhaps they lived in one house all of their lives and their homes
were very stable with extended family and cousins surrounding them all of their young lives and they aren’t affected
with this crazy deep need for
“home.”
Just thinking about having these pieces of furniture
near me ~ even if they are still in storage ~
I’m already excited!

And I have sold many pieces of furniture over the years
but for now most of the big pieces will stay.
I always said I’d keep and pass on the large red sectional
that is Hickory Chair and eight-way hand-tied.
It’s a down-filled sofa and is sooo comfortable to lie on
and take a nap on a lazy afternoon.

I think it has to go…
It won’t fit in whatever house we find here in
North Texas.

The mirrors will definitely be staying

A piece is already broken off the big one as I remember
my daughter was overtired and was being rough with it when she was moving it in and out of its spot between the bookcases…

Another 1920’s or 1930’s mirror was broken as it was being taken off the wall in our living room and readying it to be packed.
Ç’est la vie…

In between those memories  though
you can bet there will be a can {or two or four} of
whoop-spider going on!
😉

I’m also planning on visiting friends who I didn’t get
to visit last time ~ if they are home ~ and seeing
the kids in our classroom.
A box of books and early Valentine’s gifts are

her small rv home.

I have  a friend here where we live who has special needs and lives on her own however organizing her living spaces
is just not her forté.

She and I have been friends for a little over a year now and we walk together all the time and I help her with things
she may need from time to time.
I have helped by taking her to get groceries or driving her to the doctor, as a number of her other friends also do.
It is a privilege to be able to help in this way and it is really an honor to be able to use my organizing and decorating skills
to make her life more
functional and beautiful.
🙂

Begin by clearing out

My friend had already begun packing up things
she no longer needed and had outgrown in bags.
We continued some of this on our first day organizing.
Since she has lost a considerable amount of weight
she is excited to be receiving gently used clothing
from friends and finding new clothing at a few nicer local thriftshops.

We concurrently went through her kitchen pulling out
duplicate and unneeded items and talked about having everything you need to prepare meals and for baking everyday right where you cook and mix things.
We also discussed ways to organize the kitchen ~ by use and item.
You can see in the top photos we have begun putting all the
kitchen appliances in the cupboard above the tan chair.
Then we worked on putting paper goods and less needed
kitchen items together in that same area.

Reorganize and space planning

Since my friend has lost a considerable amount of weight she is excited to be receiving gently used clothing from friends and finding new clothing at a few of the nicer local thriftshops.
A mutual friend takes her out shopping about once a month
or so and they make a day of it by going out to lunch, too.

As we worked on purging those no-longer-needed clothing pieces
I spent time teaching my friend about hanging long items
together and about taking unrelated items out of each closet.

Small space living is the same whether one lives in a trailer,
a small cottage home or in a studio apartment.
Really organizing one’s built-in cupboards and closets
is key to making our homes look and feel bigger!
😉

Our Yoda shows an interest in helping clean and organize.

Clean as you go

One of the biggest tips I can offer is to clean and wipe down
cupboards inside and out and the items going inside as you go through them.
Putting everything away all nice and clean makes a big difference in how we feel about ourselves and about our home!

Part of the fun  for us was just looking at what
my friend had and seeing things with fresh eyes!
Since there are only three small storage drawers in the kitchen which were meant for the silverware, some utensils and a few linens for wiping and washing dishes,
I showed my friend how to display her silverware in large
water glasses up on her counter along with an unused crock
to hold her utensils.
Just doing this gave us a free drawer to have the
ever-needed “junk drawer.”

Repurpose closet spaces

Above her television is a perfect spot for my friend’s jeans
casual pants that can be folded and t-shirts.
Here we will put in some foldable shelving to give her
better stacking ability.
This closet will probably hold other things as well
but she really needs clothes closet storage ~
her chief complaint with not being able to put
things away as she would like.

Store away non-used items

Christmas is just over for the year so we worked on
giving her a bigger storage box for her needs.
In this new box we were able to put in all of her blank
Christmas cards, wrapping paper and decorations
and ornaments as it was just the perfect size!
This box fit perfectly in her really unused storage area
on the outside of her trailer.
We will be storing more items there as we get further
into our reorganizing adventure.
😉

Fixing up the bedroom will be here in the next few weeks.
To be continued…
I’ve been over one other day and we worked more on
putting things for donation out in my car
so…
The next time we get together we will probably tackle
the bedroom closets and storage needs in there.

Here are some items we might need in my friend’s home
that I began pricing when I picked up my own groceries
this past weekend.

Stay tuned!
Being kind and helping others is what I believe in.
I love my decorating and gardens but my heart is
firmly planted in helping others and especially friends
to achieve their dreams and goals, too.

*An Update
My friend and I walk together and attend the same Bible
study, but we haven’t really got back to more organizing
in her little trailer home.
I did share some organizational skills with her and we
took a bunch of outgrown clothes and other clothes
which were donated to her to the Salvation Army.
People at her church and here where we live give her
bags of clothes to sort through all of the time ~ one of
the problems she has with organizing.

So… with that, we will get back finishing organizing as
the weather cools off, hopefully!
🙂
