Add Autumn Touches to Your China Hutch

Happy Fall! Happy Autumn! Whichever way you say it, isn’t it so nice to have cooler weather in which to enjoy long walks, drink a warm mug of decadent hot chocolate, and to enjoy warm evenings snuggled around the fireplace? With that, I am prepping the decor in our china hutch for Autumn and the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday so we can do just that… 🙂

Our dining room opens right into the living room and, of course, the fireplace is front and center. Although we haven’t ever lit the fireplace, we do enjoy the warm glow from candles during the winter.

For fall, I pulled off anything “summery” and began with this:

Add Autumn by swapping our china

Changing out the china you have standing inside your china cabinet or china hutch is probably the easiest way to transform this hardworking furniture piece’s look. For this fall’s look, I wanted to bring in the warming colors of the season ~ toasty oranges, chocolatey browns and warm blushing reds.

I did this by bringing in our pinkish-red harvest transferware plates, our favorite small turkey platter, and by adding little candles in fall colors of oranges and browns.

Here I’ve added a little Indian corn candle I have had since my kids were little. It is just to the left of the fachwerk haus (half-timbered house), a piece I found in England when I was there with my kids in 2005. The other half-timberred house (on the right) is a German collectible given to me back when I was in high school by an old boyfriend’s mother. They had just moved back from Wiesbaden, Germany, after five years overseas. I love these little houses!

Here I’ve added the little Colonial American couple which have been my husband’s since a trip to Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia many years ago. They are favorite pieces to bring out for dressing up our home during autumn time and Thanksgiving.

I’ve swapped out the darling teal tea tin I had in here for summer with this soft lavender one for fall. I like how it brings out the subtle lavender undertones of the pink roses on the hand-painted china piece in the background. Dried flowers feature in the pewter creamer which was a wedding gift from my mother and father, picked up at Woodbury Pewter in Woodbury, Connecticut.

What are we watching?

My husband and I have officially kicked off our holiday season by watching one of my favorite movies, Little Women… The opening scene is set in the fall of the 1860’s in the middle of the American Civil War.

I am also re-reading Jan Karon’s book, Shepherds Abiding, but I’ll save that for another post. 😉
