Racing the light
with the swiftly sliding sun sinking down to bed
for the night…
I ran around like a mad woman snapping photographs of
as many of the roses and flowers with the rose garden as
I could here at the Biltmore Estate in
Ashville, North Carolina
as a record of all the fall beauty there is
so I’d be able to share it with you.
“The Rose Garden has been in continuous cultivation since 1895 when Frederick Law Olmsted walked the grounds as George Vanderbilt’s chief horticultural adviser,”
writer Judy Ross wrote in an article talking about
Lucas Jack, Biltmore Rosarian.

Today I’ll just share a few thoughts on the gardens and
let the roses and photographs do most of the talking.
Here in these two photos, the one on the left I used a
flash and the one on the right is just natural light.
These are a little out of order
as I took these when I arrived
back to the car to leave the
estate; however, as I was
driving away…
That’s when I found the rose
garden!
And why I stopped.

I loved the espaliered roses and trees
shown here in the above photograph.
Several fences and trellises were posted
about for roses to climb on.
I also loved the architectural beauty of the many wooden
arbors, pillars and bent arbors Biltmore’s rose garden
contained.
Putting four bent metal arbors together in a square
then situating one or two climbing roses
around each intersection
makes for the prettiest mass of climbing roses
I have ever seen!
{I had always wondered how that was done ~ now I know.}
I took several of these arbors over the brick pathways
so I’d remember how they were put together.
These are 8 foot tall arbors with 8 – 10 ft. spans from
side to side which are then connected together
about 4′ off the ground.
Through the looking glass…
Love the lattice work set on the diagonal!
The circle “windows” set into the lattice here repeats
the curved arches of the paladian windows of
the greenhouse beyond.
Just lovely!
