France’s Cinematic Views: Day 2 in Paris’ 7th, 8th & 1st Arrondissements

Well, my friends, my blog is finally living up to its name: French Ethereal! I am sooo excited to share more from our trip abroad. I went absolutely nuts taking photographs… Everywhere you look (and I do mean everywhere) is like looking through a movie camera lens…

Lots of motorcyclists and bicyclists spin about the city, and did you know you could rent motorcycles while you are here? I saw them available on some websites and you can go for a tour around Paris on a 1:1 tour via vendors through AirBnB’s website. (not sponsored)

I fell in love with all of the different bistro chairs! Each café and restaurant had their own version. These were at the little café we ate at our very first evening in Paris. From here, we walked over to the Eiffel Tower for the tour that never happened. We got scammed and I let AirBnB know about it.

Cute fence and locks! Actually, the only ones we saw. Never got down to the right bridges crossing over from Rive Gauche to Rive Droit (Left Bank to the Right Bank of Paris) to find more.
Love all the mini gardens up on Parisians’ balconies!

I thought I might pick up a bouquet of flowers to have in our hotel or bnb rooms, but Amy talked me out of it because…

How would we carry them on the train out to Grenoble and back?? Along with our suitcases and backpacks, etc??

She was right, of course. But it would have been lovely to have a bouquet to enjoy!

And there were lavender plants… sigh!

What place is this?

Pretty little park… And look at that cute wrought iron in the front here! Literally as I write this, I am just noticing it…

More of the park with a grand building in the background. Anyone know what this building is??

Oh, duh! Nm, I answered my own question just a few photos from now ~ Le Musée de L’Armée Invalides.

I went for a walk late on the morning of the second day we were in Paris on my own as my daughter was really, really tired and wanted to take a nap mid-morning. This was the day I posted that first look at Paris post and I typed until around noon. We’d had breakfast in our room (I brought hers up on a tray from the restaurant downstairs), and she waited too long for me to be ready. Totally my fault!

Anyway, this building is the military museum I walked by and it was free to enter on this particular day!

I started to go inside, but decided to save it for another day as I was on a mission to find a wedding present for my niece and soon-to-be new nephew…

Love the canons!

It was Thursday, 21 Julliet 2022. I didn’t know how to use the Metro yet, so I walked a couple of miles down the quai (sounds like “Kay”), across a big bridge there along Rue de Grenelle.

Our driver, a few days later, when we came back from Grenoble, told us this was built sometime around the French Revolution. It may have been a hospital for the “invalides,” soldiers injured during the war… Not sure.

The gorgeous wrought iron and gilded entrance into the museum…
Louis the Sun King’s coat of arms??

For someone who has shot over 50,000 photographs on black & white and color film since I was 8 years old, and now digitally… France is a feast for the eyes and the camera lens!

It is no wonder why Paris is featured as THE CITY in so many movies…

I took these photos just with my iPhone 12… I did shoot some with my big Canon but didn’t want to haul it all over the city every time I went out, so chose to just use my phone. Sooo glad these came out well!

This bridge opposite Le Musée de L’Armée was dedicated to these French soldiers who were killed during WWII. The man memorialized on the left-hand plaque received the
Cross of War (Croix de Guerre) for what he did on the battlefield.
Part of the museum under exterior renovation and cleaning. Might be a different museum but I shot this that same day…
Part of the bridge and looking beyond to the Jardin des Tuleries and beyond.

After crossing over the bridge, I walked around the Luxor Obelisk heading toward the Galleries Lafayette, a shopping mall someone told me about which might have a culinary store. As it was, I headed left towards the mall after this park, and after going around the sidewalk of an enormous roundabout…

Here is the massive roundabout in front of the Luxor Obelisk, which I learned later is the Place de la Concorde, 8th Arrondissement. I knew it was important but didn’t know where I was at the time. You can read more about how this obelisk was a gift from Pasha Muhammed Ali to France here.

I was getting pretty tired from walking at this point, as I hadn’t eaten lunch, so I shot these photos but didn’t really know where I was or I would have walked down the Champs Élysées (left of here) ~ the “Elysian Fields” ~ a place for dead heroes (in Greek mythology).

Also where many people were guillotined during the French Revolution… Ick!

A lovely little shaded park and pathway… Sorry it is not centered. Bad photographing on my part!

I walked right by the Tuleries Garden and did go inside. I ate lunch at a cute café there but I want to share that later, so no photos here!

Eventually, I did find a culinary store called Boulanger, which I understand is a small chain store. For my niece and her fiancé, I bought a pasta maker. I wanted to get them something they might not buy for themselves but would be fun and useful! Ikea was across the street so I went there afterwards, and used their restroom (always important!) and to pick up a gift card, too. <3

After that, I forced myself to go figure out how to ride the Metro home…

My feet were tired… Riding back to our hotel aboard the Metro to our hotel ~ Les Jardins de Eiffel ~ was bliss! A French woman was very sweet and pulled down the fold-up seat for me so I could sit. She must have seen the harried look on my face, lol!

I got off at Quai d’Orsay Metro station, and headed back over the rue (street) and up a few blocks to our hotel. I felt a little more “Parisienne” that day and “less tourist!” I was learning how to get around. ;)’

Round deux!

I was totally excited when I got back (and now rested from sitting) and Amy was well rested after a two-hour+ nap. I told her about my adventures and that I had four €2.00 coins ~ enough for two trips out to L’Opéra Metro stop in the 1st Arrondissement and back ~ we could go back!?!

Amy caught the bug of excitement, so off we went to hop the Metro!!! She was excited about going shopping at a Parisienne mall, and maybe to dinner downtown (we actually ate when we got back to our little area in the 7th, which turned out to be perfect).

Le Grand Hôtel ~ one of the first beautiful buildings we saw in this part of Paris (1st Arrondissement) ~ with its outside café. Love the wrought iron and deep green patio covers and umbrellas!!!

L’Opéra National de Paris

After walking just a block or so from the Metro station, we came to Paris’ National Opera ~ the Palais Garnier. I asked my daughter if she’d like to go look inside but we decided to save L’Opéra for another time.

Wouldn’t it be fun to see a theatrical production here?!!

Part of the rear side of L’Opéra, if I remember correctly.
Another cinematic view…
The beginning of the shopping district

We continued on our walk and headed towards our final destination and a little shopping…

A little surprise garden down an alleyway…

Les Galeries Lafayette

We found a whole shopping area with stores like Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, and more. We followed the crown right into the glass doors of Les Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann. Opened in 1893, the Galeries has a magnificent cupola ceiling created by “master glassworkerJacques Grüber and finished around 1912 (The Good Life France).

The building underwent a major renovation in 1932 which “introduced some ‘modern’ angular and faceted Art Deco elements into its structure and decoration.”

The Good Life France

We browsed some lovely clothes and looked at lots of fun jewelry. After about an hour we decided it was time to head back to dinner… (Funny how “tired” sneaks up on you!)

We had a great time shopping and just browsing a few stores. Surprisingly, we only bought a few t-shirts but didn’t buy anything really fashionable.

On our way back towards the Metro station, we came across this light post. It was so ornate.

Now I see what looks like some kind of Viking warship… Perhaps this was erected when Napoleon was in power?

I wonder what its significance is? Anyway, thoughts for another day. 🙂

I hope you have enjoyed this day in Paris! A city of much military history and more.

Jusqu’à a la prochaine fois,

Barb 🙂

Welcome to another Wednesday Share Your Style, friends!!! I apologize for getting the party up late this evening. I have no excuse other than I got five hours of sleep and it’s the end of the school year. No posts for me with the heavy work outdoors schedule but I will be back writing and sharing what’s new here soon!

I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day either for yourself or celebrating with the significant women in your lives. My daugher sent a Tiff’s Treats box of chocolate chip cookies and another of truffles. They are getting eaten sparingly!

Later on Mother’s Day, I was out planting again in the 90 degree heat and thankfully there was a great breeze. The soil is well roto-tilled and now it is just a matter of just digging holes, fertilizing and getting plants in the ground. It was pleasantly comfortable outside, even if hot. All of the plants are doing well with water every morning or every other day, depending. Trying this new strategy this year. A post with the south fence all planted will be coming soon!

Well, this week’s party is all about patriotic crafts, tablescapes and some travel ideas for summer holidays!

Let’s get to the party, shall we?

And here are this week’s featured posts…

Good Wednesday evening, friends!! No new post this week but I do have a couple of photographs to share with you. I was out in the back garden last weekend, rototilling, raking and planting a couple of small trees…

Got the second Jane Magnolia planted near the left corner! This baby will only get to 15′ tall and about 10′ wide. The Thuja/Emerald Green Arborvitae will grow to about the same height but only about 3′ wide. Perfect for this corner spot and just adding color to the back fence!

The roses have been doing sooo well this year! Along the south house wall, all five roses are in bloom. Here is the Miranda Lambert deep pink rose in bloom just before a rainstorm last weekend. I quickly cut some of the roses and plunked them in a glass vase to save them from the incoming rain. So glad I did!!! Love them!!

Miranda Lambert ~ which has a lovely light scent!

We have some wonderful Mother’s Day features for you this week. So excited for Mother’s Day!! Hubby bought me some Ear Buds for this year’s MD so I’d be able to watch movies when I fly next (hopefully our trip to France this summer!).

Happy Wednesday to y’all! Funny story, I heard some girls talking today at school after school and this one girl kept saying, “y’all.” It’s just so typical Texas!!! And I am definitely picking it up as part of my lexicon. 😉

Well, sorry I am super late with SYS tonight… I came home, ate my Taco Bell chicken power bowl and promptly fell asleep. I have another cold and I am also tired from visiting up north with my kids for our little grandson’s 2nd birthday. We had a great time but it’s still traveling by air (with lots of wind turbulence… Can you say stressful??) and just not being home, so I guess my body is making up for it.

But, anyway, I DID manage to get one post out this week and then let’s get onto this week’s features… It’s all about Easter, amigos y amigas!!

Here’s what I shared this past week at French Ethereal…

Early Springtime in the Garden ~ sharing early photos and really recent ones as the daffodils really ramped up their bloom time!

Happy Belated St. Patrick’s Day!

Happy belated St. Patrick’s Day to y’all! I missed getting this post out so thought I’d share it here a couple of days late. This winter has been crazy busy with my mother-in-law coming to stay with us, helping her find a new home and now helping her unpack.

Between working at school, the craziness there and helping Mom on the weekends, I just haven’t been writing (or photographing) much lately…

a conglomeration of Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter all mushed into one…

It is really nice to have this week off from school to be able to relax a bit, try and get over a head cold (yuck!), and later this weekend I head out to Athens, Texas for an IOOF state assembly meeting. It’s just a one-day event on Monday, so I won’t be back to work until Wednesday ~ which makes our holiday week extend a little longer. 🙂

Our springtime theme of light pinks in the new begonias and pretty pansies out front.

I have been cleaning and redecorating a bit with changes to the china hutch ~ switching it over from Valentine’s (never got a post out…) to a spring/Easter theme. (Might get it out.) It looks nice as I sit here and type!

A little shamrock Gini has had for years… It lives in compacted dirt in this antique pot thrown by her father back in the 1920’s or so.

I had been repotting my mother-in-law’s cuttings from her 57 year old garden in California and a bunch have made it three months now! Two roses have rooted for sure, and several other plants have as well. All had unfortunately sat overnight in hard freezing temps in her car while she and her son (Mr. Ethereal) slept in a hotel on their way here over New Year’s.

When I potted these up in early January, I mixed my own compost and added some Espoma Starter fertilizer. We were rewarded this week with these pretty blooms!

About half of those plants have survived with many of the succulents doing the best. No geraniums made it, though… 🙁 Just too cold for them in that car and here. 🙁

A few of the plants hanging out in the dining room window. They catch the afternoon sunlight here but will move up to better pots here later this spring.

But spring is coming and with a good fertilizer feed, I expect these survivors to begin putting on leaves and to start flourishing.

I’ve just moved my plants out of the greenhouse/potting shed and I’ll get a post out as soon as the yard is swept up and looking tidy. I ordered some bulbs online and got those nepeta and hellebores planted this week from Dutch company K. Van Bourgondien (not sponsored, but would love to be!).

new magnolias!

The dwarf magnolias I bought at Lowe’s last month and sheltered in the shed are bursting into bloom! They made it through the second Arctic overnight 25 degrees just fine, piled with leaves and wrapped against the cold with a garden quilt. I put them back in the shed so their tender open petals wouldn’t be blown off in the 45 mph gusts we had on Thursday and Friday.

I will shoot some more pics for you! They are gorgeous… This type of magnolia only grows to about 12′ tall and wide, which is perfect for our backyard.

St. Patrick’s Day

BY ELIZA COOK

St. Patrick’s Day! St. Patrick’s Day!

Oh! thou tormenting Irish lay—

I’ve got thee buzzing in my brain,

And cannot turn thee out again.

Oh, mercy! music may be bliss

But not in such a shape as this,

When all I do, and all I say,

Begins and ends in Patricks’s Day.

Had it but been in opera shape,

Italian squall, or German scrape,

Fresh from the bow of Paganini,

Or caught from Weber of Rossini,

One would not care so much—but, oh!

The sad plebeian shame to know

An old blind fiddler bore away

My senses with St. Patrick’s Day.

I take up Burke in hopes to chase

The plaguing phantom from its place;

But all in vain—attention wavers

From classic lore to triplet quavers;

An “Essay” on the great “Sublime”

Sounds strangely set in six-eight time.

Down goes the book, read how I may,

The words will flow to Patrick’s Day.”

***found on Poetry Foundation.org

And we’ve begun working on the fence again…

Whoa!!!

St. Paddy’s Day winds swirled around and pulled the east end of the southern fence away from its post. Hubby has since tied it back with a bungie cord. Now the next post towards where I was standing is pulling out… Good thing Hubby put in 10 metal fence posts for the new fence just outside of view!

Must be those rascally Leprechauns…

Cute little guy found on the internet and hailing from Oriental Trading Company.
Garlic, green onions and potatoes are planted and beginning to grow in this planter.

We had swirling winds during the day on Thursday. Dust devils pushed leaves up on the patios out back and in front. Forget about blowing them off!

During the night the rain storm showed up with cool cloud-to-cloud lightning…

The strange reflections on this photograph are off my phone as I shot this picture. This was a lightning streak torn across the sky which left the cloud visible afterward. Very strange and beautiful!

And that’s kinda how our St. Patrick’s Day was ~ super windy and then spotted rain. Made a mess of our cars; got a car wash today while filling the tank (yikes! almost $100…)

More rain and winds are expected this coming week. We sure need the rain! Texas is in its 3rd year of drought, from what I see. So used to drought, coming from California… (roll eyes!)

Well, that’s it for today, friends!! I hope you had a lovely St. Patrick’s Day and might have even eaten some corned beef and cabbage. I forgot to buy some at the store but it sure would have tasted good… ;)’

Happy blessings to you,

Barb 🙂

Love this cutie patootie!!!

Happy almost New Year’s Eve, friends!!! Can you believe that another year has just flown by? I am grateful for the Covid vaccines that have come out, for surviving two rounds of Covid-19 during 2020, and for finally getting to really meet my grandson, Milo!

Milo loved how huge the oak trees were and enjoyed picking up acorns big and small.

The kids came for an early Christmas and we went down to Sea Life Park Aquarium in Grapevine, Texas, then a couple of days later we went to the Fort Worth Zoo. Both were excellent and the latter reminded me so much of the San Diego Wild Life Park in Escondido, California. Just the whole safari theme, the way the grounds were laid out… I really felt at home and I believe my daughter Amy and son Peter felt the same. 💜

Well, I’m back working on the pavers heading from the backyard oak tree towards the entryway to the south garden. Hubby worked hard on the shed as he had time in between working during the Christmas week and these past two days. So… the shed is CLOSE but not quite finished. I did share a little on my YouTube channel today about what I’ve been doing and I’ll probably post there again tomorrow. It’s not pretty with lovely additions but I hope to learn how to do all that in the coming year! (My New Year’s resolution… 😉 )

So let’s get this party started…

Oh my goodness! I totally spaced last week with Thanksgiving coming on… I didn’t even think about creating SYS until about 10pm last Wednesday night. Hubby and I have been super busy working inside the shed, since he only had nights and the two weekends to help (before traveling back to California for work). The shed is almost done and I’ll share a nice post about its transformation soon!

Oh, well! Guess I should have said I was taking a week off anyway… Lol! This week we have a few Thanksgiving posts left over to share (pun intended), and a bunch of fun Christmasy ones for you… 💜

Thanksgiving at Our Home

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! After not being able to get together with family for the better part of a year last year, due to Covid restrictions, we planned to get together with a couple of friends. That fell through when one became ill and landed in the hospital, (he is home and doing better) so… Mr. Ethereal and I enjoyed a thanksgiving meal by ourselves. 🙂

I shared this tablescape earlier with just the pumpkin centerpiece. By just adding a few tableware pieces in browns and white, our Thanksgiving table was set! The cups and saucers are from Johnson Brothers’ Friendly Village and the salad plates were found at Cracker Barrel a few years ago.

More pieces may be available, but I only found these small dessert/salad plates with pheasants and bears on them. They appear very Scandinavian to me with the outer ring of flowers around the brim ~ what do you think?

Creamware for Thanksgiving

I kept the Shabby Chic rumpled tablecloth look and set the table simply ~ with just the white dinner plate, salad plate, cup and saucer, and white handled flatware. I realized too late that I had forgotten the napkins! My favorite cream napkins with lace edging would be perfect here.

Really love this table setting with the faux pumpkins, browns, creams and white!

November flew by between work and working on the shed and garden during the weekends, that I didn’t get to share many fall posts, so here I’ll do a little catch-up:

Out front, the impatiens have been in constant bloom since I bought them in early May or April. I moved the summer center flowers out to the garden beds and set down two medium-sized plant rings in each planters’ center. Then I double-stacked two white flat-stacker Cinderella pumpkins with two round white and cream pumpkins on top.

The effect was very ethereal and was just the soft fall look I was going for this year! Nothing too bold and orange, just soft and faded…

This was a neighboring garden I walked past on one of my walks and I think I shared all three of these photographs on my Instagram account. Love the soft pinks popping through all the happy Black Eyed Susans!

Moving back inside, the tablecloth is one I found in England on our trip over to see my brother and his family in 2005. I love its gently curving oval ends! Here you can just see the way it drapes along the curve.

Ethereal in candlelight…

Out of the many tablescapes I’ve created over the years, I think this is one my absolute favorite…

Our dinner

I cooked a 12 lb turkey for this year’s gobble, then made mashed potatoes, candied yams, stuffing and gravy from the pan drippings.

I think we were both glad to be home after all, although it would have been fun to visit with our friends. Dinner was good and a nice treat after many quick meals and Hubby having been away on business for the previous three weeks.

For dessert I’d baked a homemade pumpkin pie! The first in many, many years. ;)’

How was your Thanksgiving? I hope it was a good, restful day for you with a nice weekend right afterwards!

Happy holiday season, and many blessings from our home to yours,

Barb
