Create a Quick & Easy Valentine Topiary Vignette on a Budget

Welcome everyone to this month’s Valentine’s Centerpiece Pinterest Challenge! As always, a big thank you to our host and friend, Cindy from County Road 407 who finds such wonderful ideas to inspire us. This month’s Valentine idea is a breath-taking topiary piece which hits home for me.

I love that topiaries are back in fashion as I was gifted a gorgeous ivy topiary years ago which eventually became a large outdoor plant. Since I couldn’t locate any actual ivy to recreate that look for this challenge, I opted for something a little outside the box…

I am Barbara Chapman and I’d love it if you’d follow me here on my blog and on any of my other social media sites, too.  Thank you!💜

French Ethereal: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest

Welcome to French Ethereal! If you are just coming over from Lynne’s site, My Family Thyme, for the first time, welcome!! I hope you will consider subscribing to my blog. I always enjoy visiting with new friends. 🙂 And don’t you just love Lynne’s topiary?? Truly lovely and easy to make!

Our inspiration this month is a gorgeous Valentine’s Topiary Centerpiece created by Kate from Southern Home & Hospitality. Love this soft Valentine’s look!!!

The rosemary heart topiaries, the terracotta pots, and the peonies are all in that same, rich peachy-terracotta color! This just sings Valentine’s without being too cutesy.

Now I looked at grapevine heart wreaths, and yes, I could have copied this, but I truly wanted to do something different.

I did try to find living ivy to make a new topiary as I would love to have another one for indoors. I miss having the one we had in our previous homes.

This is the second ivy topiary (original post) I fashioned from the original ivy you can just see to the left in the photograph below.

I looked for actual ivy to recreate a topiary like the ones above, but ivy is not available at the garden centers right now. I wish I could have brought these lion planters with us when we moved out, but there was just no room in our storage units.

Those pots were part of the inspiration for my Valentine project, plus also for many of the terracotta pots I have today. I loved their French style!

A little spring for you from a couple of years ago! 😉

.

So, what to do for our Valentine’s centerpiece instead?

I tried a few things here on the sofa table:

  • one terracotta pot
  • a basket for more texture
  • various plant ideas
  • a Valentine’s tablecloth folded into a runner to ground our centerpiece
  • various tchotchkes to complete the arrangement

Terracotta was a no brainer. I didn’t have three matching pots, but I did have this lovely pot in my greenhouse shed which has that same soft terracotta look.

I found it down at Ikea, I believe, while on a garden shopping trip a couple of years ago.

The faux roses didn’t work here, but I really like the two green plants together along with the three elevated hearts.

The hearts bring in the topiary look from our inspiration piece and are my “outside the box” idea. And, they are small enough to easily pack away after the holiday ~ always a plus!

I then brought in a French-style tin planter to add extra volume to the vignette. I liked that element from the inspiration photo.

.

Staying budget-friendly

Using things I already owned, along with the purchase of a faux pepperoni plant and the three hearts-on-sticks from At Home (not sponsored), this Valentine Vignette stayed within my budget.

I spent just under $30. The three hearts totaled around $10 and the faux indoor potted pepperoni plant was $19.

I do try and shop our home first ~ which is the biggest budget saver of all ~ as I am sure you do, too. However, I will definitely use both of these purchases a lot in the future!

But something was still needed from our inspiration photo… There it is! Adding a beeswax candle with its pretty bee medallion tied to it gives this vignette its finishing touch.

Voilà! Now this Valentine topiary vignette is complete. This honestly took me about 10 minutes to put together for you ~ a super quick and easy centerpiece with trying just a few different items until it “worked.”

.

Decorating tip:

If you are just starting out in your own home or apartment, keeping a few staple pieces on hand, like inexpensive baskets and small plants, makes decorating much easier.

Gathering them at after-holiday sales and/or from thrift shops makes everything affordable. This is my biggest recommendation for when you feel inspired to redecorate your home! 🙂

Thank you for stopping by today, friends, and I hope you enjoyed my rendition of our Valentine Centerpiece challenge. Please leave me a comment below and tell me what you did or didn’t like in this vignette, or what you would do differently.

  1. I like what you did. It’s low, versatile and can be kept as long as the plants go, once the hearts are removed (who knows what might go in next! Shamrocks?!) Excellent tips for those starting out, too.

    1. Jeanie, thank you for your sweet thoughts, and thank you for the idea for using shamrocks! I have those two larger shamrocks picked up a few years ago. One tucked in would be really pretty.

    1. Thank you, Rachel. I appreciate your sweet comments. I do love vintage and vintage-style pieces added to my decor.

Have a great rest of your week,
      Barb 🙂

    1. Thank you, Cindy. I appreciate your lovely thoughts! I was thinking the same thing when I picked up the plant. 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your week,
      Barb 🙂

  2. Of course you would be the one with the greenest thumbs and use real plants! I love your interpretation and how your vignette turned out. Great job! Thanks for joining us. pinned

    1. Ha, Cindy! Only one of those plants was real. That rounded leaf “pepperoni” plant is faux. As you know, the silk flowers made today are much more realistic. It is hard to tell on camera, for sure! Glad you enjoyed my Valentine centerpiece.

Have a great rest of your week!
      Barb 🙂

    1. Thank you, Lora. I actually learned about pepperoni plants from Laura at Garden Answer on YouTube a few years ago. They have spots on their leaves which gives them their name.

Very cute plants, in real life! This guy is faux. 😉 Glad you enjoyed my Valentine’s vignette.

  3. Barb, great job on your topiary! Love those pots and how you styled the vignette. It has such charm mixed in with the real plants. The candle adds a lovely touch of warmth.

    1. Thank you, Libbie! This was a fun centerpiece to put together. Already moved the one pot with its heart topiaries over to the dining room table. 😉

Have a great rest of your weekend,
      Barb 🙂

  4. You may get a comment twice. I kept getting an error. I do love this look! so sweet!!! Just a touch for the holiday, but stores so easily. The mirror above the desk is a show stopper!!!

    1. I appreciate your sweet thoughts, Christy! It’s nice to have just a few things out for Valentine’s Day, and now I’m ready to switch things up for spring. That mirror we found at a resale store in Sacramento one year around my birthday. It hung in our stairwell at our last California house and it fit perfectly here in our entryway. Glad you like it!

Have a great rest of your week and Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your family,
      Hugs,
      Barb 🙂
