Welcome to Final Reveal Day of our refreshed primary bedroom closet, dear friends! This has been a labor of love in just over a three week period, but a considerable long time thinking about what this closet should look like and how it needed to function.
Of course, trying to get everything to fit back into the closet will be a challenge but challenge accepted! Having to rethink where everything will go takes some time, doesn’t it? Always a bit daunting but still fun. 😉

Design Choices
I have had this shoe holder folded up in my closet for at least twenty years. Our very first walk-in closet, when we were first married and living on Camp Pendleton (a US Marine Corps base in Southern California), I found we needed more storage for our clothes so I went looking and found some beautiful black background storage pieces for our closet which had gorgeous deep pink roses on them. I bought a foldable hanging sweater holder and a shoe holder like this one.
Then I realized I wasn’t sure if black was my color…
I realized I liked lighter backgrounds better, but now?? I wish I also had those black-background rose closet hangers… They were beautiful… And I’ve kept this shoe holder ever since.
My friend Dawn, who also lived on Camp Pendleton, loved Empire and Biedermeier style furniture and black was her signature color. 🙂 Dawn, our mutual friend Sally, and I were all excited to decorate our first homes and we loved interior design. Dawn was also with me when I found my 1930’s/1940’s French-style desk (out in the living room entryway) that day up in the antique district in the old town of Orange, California. Anyway, Dawn really liked those rose-covered pieces, them so I gave them to her.
My design idea here was to use a piece of cut-off 1″ x 2″ that perfectly fit this width as the “backer” along the wall from which to hang this shoe holder. This would take the place of the second shoe rack I was using below on the floor and which now was holding shoes on my husband’s side of the closet.
I asked said-husband, Mr. Ethereal ;), to hang it for me. He’s better at hanging things on the walls with my limited upper body strength anymore.

The Final Closet Reveal
I am so so happy we worked on our closet this summer! It turned out well. 🙂 This first photograph shares the the entryway, of course.
This photo shows my side of the closet plus the backwall. We did get the 39″ wardrobe cabinet from Ikea. I went back to Ikea the following Monday, after Mr. Ethereal installed this cabinet, and picked up a third drawer. Later in the week, I moved the clothing rod up near the top of the shelving unit, and over last weekend, Hubby added in the third drawer and replaced the shelf.
This photo shows what I was hoping to achieve by adding in the upper wooden shelves ~ better storage for all of our seasonal clothing, plus storage for smaller things. One long wire shelf spans from wall to wall and there is a smaller shelf tucked under it on the left for my long-hanging clothing.
The rose-strewn hanging shoe rack holds some of my summer flipflops, slip-ons and light-weight gloves and hats as well as a few shoes. The rest of the shoes sit on the wooden rack and on the floor down below. 🙂
And here is how Mr. Ethereal’s side of the closet looks now. Pretty much the same but with the ability to move shirts around on the clothing rod much easier while looking for a particular shirt.
From raw scribbled ideas on a sticky-note, then to sketched-out plans, and finally to completion, we are really happy with our “custom closet” and its refresh. Let me know what you think about the changes, thank you!
