Good morning, dear friends! A few weeks ago, Mr. Ethereal decided all on his own to give our kitchen closet pantry a refresh. 🙂
Our pantry has these wire shelves, which are fine, except for the cans and bottles we stack in there like to fall through the wires and lean.
Then the can stacks like to really lean and sometimes fall over. It’s a whole balancing act thing in there. 😉
So Charles came across a video about doing a project to help change up and fix the pantry with just a few simple things to alleviate this problem. Big win!!! 😀

Supplies you will need
- foam core boards
- straight edge
- measuring tape
- an exacto type knife for cutting foam core
- double-sided tape
- contact paper
So while I was gone visiting our daughter in Austin, Hubby went to the Dollar Store and looked for supplies on the cheap. He found the foam core there in a thin box and most of this was used up in this project.
He ordered the wood grained contact paper online and it came after I got back from my visit. And the other supplies we already had around the house.

Steps to follow
- Begin by measuring your shelves and cut the foam core to size. You can use off-cut pieces and combine those as needed to create your shelf base.
- Cut foam core to fit the fronts of the shelves, too (the part that hangs down)
- Cut the contact paper several inches larger than both the shelf core piece and the front hanging piece laid lengthwise and perpendicular, side by side (with the front piece vertically).
- Fold the contact paper over the long edges of each piece smoothing out any wrinkles as needed. Use double-sided tape to attach turned under edges to foam core. (Sorry there are no photos of him cutting the contact paper out! He’s camera shy at present!)
- Cut corners on a 45 deg. angle and fold sides inward and tape down. Keep smoothing.
- Start laying the completed kitchen pantry shelf cover beginning with the bottom shelf. Remove all the shelves above to make putting in each shelf cover easier ~ trust me on this! Charles tried doing this while leaving the upper shelves in and it just didn’t work.
Yes, you will have a kitchen littered with all of the content from all those shelves for a day! ;)’
This whole project cost about $20.00 for a really nice look! I know it was like $8.00 for the foam core box and I thought I saw the receipt from Amazon for $12.00 for the contact paper.

Pretty cool, huh?!! This really dressed up our shelves and now this pantry closet has a nice solid wood feel to the shelves for hardly any money.
I was totally impressed with this kitchen pantry closet refresh and other than the time it takes to cut out the foam core, wrap the contact paper around the foam core, and then the actual installation, this was an easy project. <3
And what a clean look this kitchen closet now has! Plus, as I came home from my trip to Austin to a kitchen with counters filled with cans, jars and bottles, it gave me the motivation to sort through our pantry goods and toss out anything which was really old. 😉
I had fun reorganizing the pantry and surprisingly there is more room in there now. I never realized how much space we couldn’t use because of those darned wires causing us not to be able to use precious space. Another win-win!!
Hubby has a sweet heart and worked on this kitchen cabinet pantry refresh as a surprise for me.
